We left last Friday for our Labor Day trip to Cincinnati. A good friend of mine from elementary school got married and we have some friends that live out on Northside, so we had a free place to stay, free plane tickets (thank you credit card points) and willing grand parents that wanted a couple days with their grandson. Since everything lined up correctly, we jumped on the opportunity to get out of town!
Crazy story #1: Friday morning, bright and early (actually not bright because it was still dark), we headed to our little Austin Bergstrom airport. Little did we know that our tiny airport that normally takes about 15 minutes to get through the check point had shut down their main checkpoint. We got to the airport at 6:10am and saw the most ridiculous line. Our flight left at 6:50. Problem. So Jason found some nice people to let us cut in line. . . (thank you nice people!) probably saved us 45 minutes of waiting. We got through the check point at 6:50 and bolted, and I really mean BOLTED to our gate that was 10 gates down from the check point. Turns out the plane couldn’t leave because of weather. Go figure. But we made our plane. And had some good early morning cardiovascular. Whew.
Got to Cincy, got our car and drove through a bit of Kentucky. Yes, the Cincinnati OHIO airport is in Kentucky. Right. And sorry guys, Kentucky is quite. . . colorful. . . interesting . . . it’s Kentucky-y. Once we got to downtown, it was about 11:30, so we hit up the Bistro for lunch. Pretty tasty. Love local food! Then we walked downtown a bit and visited the Cincinnati Contemporary Museum of Art. We were not impressed at the two floors that were open but it was a cool building to look at. And thankfully it was free (although we donated $2).
We had some time to kill after the anticlimatic museum and our friends weren’t going to be back at their house until 5:30pm so we decided to visit the Cincy Zoo. GOOD decision!
It was HUGE and there was so much to see (bunches of more pictures on my flickr)! We were there for three hours and still almost didn’t make it through before they closed!! I do kinda have mixed feelings on zoos. It makes me sad to see animals in confinement but I know they do their part to keep animal populations alive that otherwise wouldn’t be. So I dunno what my conclusion is on that.
We then met up with our friends and ate some of the best Indian food I have ever had at Dusmesh. I am so grateful that we had locals to tell us about this place because I would not have picked it out myself. So delicious! Afterwards we headed to Northside Tavern and had a couple beers. It was quite an awesome feeling to not have to worry about getting back to a babysitter or worry about having to wake up when Jude wake up the next morning. Quite nice indeed. And with that, Day 1 was complete!

Don’t forget that we passed by a house that had a freaking cannon in their front yard. I actually managed to find it on Google Maps!
