I’m a little late posting about this but it was so much fun that I must tell you guys about it! I have a great group of girls that gets together to sew (well we also garden and read together as well). My friend, Amanda, organizes our sew dates and decided it would be fun to make a full weekend out of sewing as a retreat! I whole heartedly agreed and went about asking my friends with their beautiful lakehouse (here and here) if we could craft in their beautiful space. It certainly inspires creativity.
We rounded up some friends that wanted to come along and it occurred to me, I often see food bloggers get together and go on vacation together (or make food together) when they didn’t previously know someone in real life, so I decided to see if one of my good blog friends, Monica, wanted to tag along. She’s made some pseudo appearances on the blog previously but we had never met in real life. After e-mailing her, I was thrilled that she wanted to fly from Chicago to come join our Austin sewing retreat. It was so great to finally get to meet her and spend time talking in real life. I think she said it well when she said it felt like old friends catching up after a year’s absence!
Amanda – aka “our faithful leader”, from My Sewcial Hour (her recap here), Monica from Deliberately Domestic (her recap here), Jenn from Married to a BMW, and Ellie from EllieK are some of the bloggers that went, but several other non-bloggers attended as well.
The lakehouse proved to be such a great place to craft. For starters, the dining room table fit 7 sewing machines and 1 serger! It was so great to get to craft at one big table together. I wish we could take that table with us – it was so wonderful! The food was yummy, the company was amazing, and there was some movie watching and toenail painting that happened as well. 🙂
The only sad part about the retreat is that I was quite under the weather and didn’t really get to focus on sewing the way I wanted to. Many breaks were taken for napping and resting since my concentration wasn’t was it normally was. My one goal for the trip was to get the quilt top completed for my little leaves quilt. Oh. My. Goodness. So. Many. Leaves. 360 little leaves to be exact. Oy. I understand why I have not seen anyone attempt this quilt on flickr or online. Time consuming to say the least.
Here I am feigning happiness after sitting in front of my sewing machine for hours and FINALLY getting to sew the blocks together after all that applique!
360 leaves later, I have a quilt top:
I’m a little uncertainly on how I feel about the color scheme that ended up emerging from the leaves. It’s a bit more varied that I had initially envisioned. . . but you know what, I think I might be a little worn out on these fabrics after all that sewing!
Next step, the back, the quilt sandwich and quilting!
Thanks to all the ladies that participated in our fun sewing weekend! I can’t wait to do something like this again. 🙂
