Still working on the projects for my curves class. This project was new for me on so many levels – I have never made a mini quilt before and I have never improv pieced anything, especially anything with curves. And this is the reason why I signed up to take a class – to get me out of my comfort zone and trying new things!

I started out with step one – making the Christmas tree. I feel like I’m getting a hang of sewing curves, which feels pretty good. I think the tree turned out festive and bright:

Then on to the wonky star, which ended up looking a bit more like a sun, due to the lack of yellow fabric in my stash. And then the sky – even though I love grey, I have very little in my stash. I ended up buying the dark grey that you see and then using Kona white and Kona bone. And to add a bit more variety, I used tea to hand dye some Kona white and bone to make them a bit darker too. I also threw some of the grey dandelion fabric in there to give the impression of snowflakes. Not sure I’m in love with the final colors. And I’m definitely not in love with how wonky the left sky turned out – there was certainly a learning curve to improv piecing that got better with the right sky.

I do love the way the hills turned out. I choose not to do red, the way the class tutorial suggested, and choose to do icier shades to imply snow covered hills. Something about having a December birthday makes me adverse to red and green together, and as I said in some of my Christmas posts, we tend to do blues and greens for Christmas, saving the red for the 4th of July and Vday.

I’m going to finish up the mini quilt today, likely with some brown striped or polka dotted binding and my new walking foot! Even though there are some things I am disappointed with in the color in this project, I am learning so much! This just reminds me how much I love to take classes.
