My First Stitch Fix!

OK, y’all, this was so much fun! If you haven’t heard of Stitch Fix (referral link, I get $25 if you sign up!) it’s a mom’s best friend. Because really, who wants to bring their kids to a store? A personal stylist picks clothing out based on a style profile you fill out! In addition to the style profile, you make a pinterest board with items that you like and they send you a box full of goodies. You go through the items they send you and keep what you like, send back what you don’t and only pay for what you keep!

I asked my stylist to pick items made in the USA so that it is much more likely that the items were made by folks 1) not in slavery 2) paid a fair wage for their hard work 3) not children. I also asked her to pick clothing that would transition between the work world and mom world, but with a sense of style and adventure. It is pricey, but since I only thrift the rest of my clothing, I feel ok support companies that make stylish clothing in the USA. Voting with your money and all that jazz.

Well look what showed up today:

20140305-145604.jpg

I was beyond excited to open it up. I have been itching to get my first fix! And to see houndstooth as the first item! Squeee!

20140305-145612.jpg

I opened up the styling tips and got to work trying on the items they sent me. I decided to try on the items doing my best to match some of the tips they sent me. Every single clothing thing I paired with my Stitch Fix clothing items were purchased at the thrift store (the shoes were not). 🙂 And of course, the majority of the jewelry I’m wearing is Noonday… Because I <3 Noonday.

20140305-145649.jpg

This first item I tried on was the 41Hawthorn Montgomery Solid Belted Shift Dress. This is a Stitch Fix Brand but is made in China. I like the neckline, it is super comfy, versatile, lightweight (which is perfect for working during our hot Austin summers) but it does feel a little plain… I haven’t made up my mind if I’m keeping it yet. I have three days to decide! 😉

IMG_4948 (1)

Next up was the Kut From the Kloth Simmons Bootcut Jean, also made in the USA. They fit perfectly, super comfortable, but are a little long. I just don’t wear heels any longer. I will likely be sending these back.

IMG_4952 (1)

On to the Pomelo Ivy Tulip Print Tab Sleeve Blouse which appears to be another Stitch Fix Brand, which hopefully means it is also made in the US. Super comfy! I’ve been trying to purge out some of the pink in my closet (there is SO MUCH PINK at the thrift stores) but I dig this pink with the cobalt tulips. Makes it feel less ‘girly’.

IMG_4953 (1)

Another way the style guide suggested to style the shirt – with a black pencil skirt. Makes it pretty versatile, eh? I’m pretty sure I’m keeping this one.

IMG_4954 (1)

Next up, Kut from the Kloth Marquis Slub Knit Dolman Sweater. Generally speaking, I tuck shirts into my maxi skirts, but I thought I’d give it a try untucked and I think I like it. It feels very hippy and it would make the maxi skirt a little more wearable during Austin’s ‘colder’ months.

IMG_4956 (1)

And here it is again with something a little more in my comfort zone. I’m thinking about keeping this one too, but I’m a little worried because white + being a mom = often ends in disaster.

IMG_4958 (1)

And finally, the item that made me excited to tear into the box, the Pomelo Jay Houndstooth Print Swing Skirt. I love the print so very much, but it gathers a bit unflatteringly (is that a word?) in the belly area and I can’t seem to escape the feeling that I could quickly sew up a very similar item myself. Undecided on whether I will keep this one.

IMG_4959 (1)

If you have feedback for me on what you think I should keep, I’m all ears! I haven’t made up my mind on a couple of items and I have a couple days to decide before I have to commit to sending back or purchasing.

I’m totally scheduling my next fix after this great first experience! If you are undecided about whether it would be good for you, check out some more about it on their website. And I would totally love it if you used my referral link. 😉

Thrift Store Haul

I’ve shared most of my thrift store finds here (see first, second and third times) and most of those times I was trying to find wearable, comfortable, ‘mommy’ clothes that weren’t too frumpy. I was transitioning from a full-time office job to staying at home. I owned no shorts, no tank tops, very few t-shirts. This time, I needed to find some work appropriate, but also Texas weather (read: heat) friendly clothing. Turns out after a couple years, my work clothes… didn’t fit any longer. So, back to the thrift store I went and I had some awesome success. I didn’t spend more than $12 on anything and most items were $4 or less. Can you tell I am on a green kick?

more thrifting finds

I found 1 dress, 1 leather belt, 6 shirts, 3 tank tops, 3 skirts, and finally 6 button-up shirts. I feel like I found some clothes that could transition from office to home pretty well!

Next up, I signed up for a Stitch Fix (that’s a referral link)… I have had several friends sign up to have Stitch Fix deliveries with great results… We’ll see how that goes for me! I’m excited because you can tell them what you are looking for in clothing, like Made in the USA!

still thrifting…

I know I had mentioned trying to figure out the disposable clothing issue but I honestly haven’t given it much mindshare lately. My brain is full of so many things competing for my attention that the most I can handle is sticking to thrift shopping for the time being.

Thrift Store Finds

Which leads me to my latest thrift store haul. My favorite thrift store was having a 50% clearance and I had an additional 20% off. I ended up with 12 tanks, 4 shirts (including the polka dot chambray shirt that I liked so much from Old Navy!!), 5 dresses, 2 skirts, 1 maxi skirt, 1 pair running shorts and 1 pair brand new flip flops. Many of the items still had their original tags! I managed to find mostly Gap, H&M, Banana Republic, JCrew, Old Navy, Loft and lucked out and found some from Anthropologie, Marc Jacobs, Nike and lululemon!

Thrift Store Finds

I was so invigorated by my thrifting finds that I totally overhauled and reorganized my closet. Which lead me to an old pair of favorite sandals that had seen better days. The silver had pretty much worn off the straps…

Old Sandals - Before

So I spray painted them (you can see one of the overspray on the sole of the left shoe)! I’m happy that I’ll get some more life out of these shoes and they won’t be given away any time soon.

Old Sandals - After

Sometimes the simple fixes are the ones that bring me the most pleasure!

Halloween

Y’all. I don’t even want to think about the election right now, so I’m not going to. Instead, I thought I’d show you some of our Halloween pictures. Our neighborhood has a pumpkin carving night where everyone comes out at sits around carving pumpkins and hanging out. It’s a lot of fun. Jude was looking forward to ‘opening our pumpkin’. When we finally did, he thought it was too slimy. Of course.

Apparently, pumpkin carving is very exciting to these little guys. Pretty hilarious. We carved a bat because, well, bats are kind of a big deal around here.

Untitled

Jude actually ended up getting sick on the Tuesday before Halloween, but his fever broke just in time for us to go to a couple of our neighbor’s houses as the ‘angry birds‘ family.

Untitled

Hope y’all had a happy and safe Halloween!

angry birds halloween

I saw this tutorial to make angry birds costumes and I knew we were going to have to make some sort of variation to have this happen in my household. Jude really likes Angry Birds. I know, I should be ashamed that I let him play phone games or something, but he’s really good at it! Turns out Jude really doesn’t like wearing costumes. I ask him every year what he wants to be for Halloween and he tells me he just wants the candy, no costume. Funny right?

But he said he’s wear a t-shirt, so t-shirt costumes it is! I’m pretty happy with how they turned out!

Angry Birds Halloween Costumes

I still need to sew and stuff the two little blue angry birds that Jude will carry around with him to throw at Jason, but I’m feeling pretty good about getting a head start!

Any fun ideas that you guys will be doing for Halloween costumes this year?

more thrifty finds (and my guilty conscience)

Y’all. The other day I ended up in Target without Jude and totally got sucked in. Target seems to do that, doesn’t it. I had a handful of items (included a navy striped dress and mint colored skinny capris that I haven’t quite stopped thinking about yet) and even tried them on. Then I sat in the dressing room and agonized about whether or not to buy the couple items I thought were cute (remember, I’m an over-thinker). Should I spend the money on new clothes? I could just NOT tell you guys, right? I mean, I did publicly declare my intent to only shop at the thrift store for the year on the blog, but that doesn’t mean I have to tell you everything? Oh but my guilty conscience…

So.

Instead, I put those items back on the rack and went home. Several days later I went to my trusty thrift store and scored these items for LESS than I would have spent on the 3-4 items at Target. That cute little black floral dress on the right? Still had tags on it. And I’m noticing a trend in the style of dress I picked out (boatneck with sleeve and waist cinch?) I am going to have to alter the tank top straps because, um, my shoulder to boob-top ratio seems to be shorter than everyone else. Or manufacturers like to see a lot of what I like to keep covered.

Thrifty Finds

And I totally found a sweet pair of heels. Gotta love the neutral colored ombre and never worn thrifted shoes that are not – 1) too high, 2) stilettos, 3) uncomfortable. Score on all three accounts. Hello date night!

Did you guys catch that there were no stripes in there this time? And I bought something with allover flowers? Who am I?

12 items total: 3 tank tops, 3 shorts, 4 dresses, a skinny belt and a pair of hot mama heels.

WIP Wednesday: maxi skirt and booties

After a lovely Mother’s Day brunch with Monica, (kid free!), we headed to an Austin fabric store and spent some time browsing. I picked up a couple of beautiful clothing fabrics, one of which was this lovely salmon colored jersey. It is so soft, it feels like silk! One of my gifts for Mother’s Day was a little time to myself to sew. It’s been awhile because our schedules have been so full so it was appreciated even more! I spent the time whipping up this lovely maxi skirt. It is so comfy. I think I’m going to be wearing it a lot.

Basically I took my hip measurement and multiplied it by 1.5. That was my width. Then I measured from my waist to the floor. That was my length. I had a piece of 2″ wide elastic so I made a 5″ depth yoke piece the length of my waist measurement. I sewed one seam up the back, encased the elastic, gathered the width of the skirt to be the width of the yoke piece and sewed it all up! Quick and easy (although not without it’s fair share of mishaps). Quicker and easier next time!

salmon maxi skirt

And then a good friend of mine found out that she is having a sweet baby girl! I had to make a little something to celebrate with her and these mila baby shoes had been on my radar for a while. The tutorial skipped a couple steps (like flipping the upper part of the shoe and ironing right sides out) but I managed to figure it out and make it happen. I’m not certain I like the way the inside is finished with the raw seam exposed. But overall, they are super cute. I kinda want a pair for myself!

Stripped baby girl booties

Pretty much, I haven’t made any of the items that are on my list to make. I keep getting sidetracked with other projects! But that’s ok with me!

This week’s stats:
Completed projects – 2
New projects – 2 (both completed)
Currently in progress – 0 (6 waiting on the sidelines – silver tutus, Macaron dress, purple skirt, tan skirt, swimsuit, stripped bag)

WIP Wednesday: shower gift, quilt basting and more

Can you say, easily distracted by instant gratification projects? Well, I needed a gift for a friend’s baby shower! I had fully intended on making something for her since she is the sort that appreciates hand made. . . enter the free infant peasant dress pattern. Oh did I mention she’s having a girl? It’s so fun to get to sew little girl things. This little peasant dress was no exception, and it was so fast! It’s sized for an infant but I’m thinking it could easily turn into a tunic shirt and last for longer than the infant stage. The fabric is cheery and fun: Brook Yellow Sunshine Dots CP Designs for Studio E.

I added a little crochet detail, well, you’ll see why in just a second. I mean it’s cute, but there’s totally another reason.

Peasant dress

Embraced the yellow and grey for the color theming, whipped up a bib and burp rag. Thought the ruffle would make the bib a bit more girly and fun.

Ruffle bib and burp rag

And here’s everything in completion. Oh yes, those little simply summer sandals were a part of the whole ensemble. That’s why there was a necessity to add the little crocheted flower to the dress. So adorable.

Baby shower gift

In other news, the scallop quilt top is pinned and I have begun quilting. I’m excited about the outcome of this one. You will have to wait and see for the results!

New projects – 3 (well they were last week’s new projects that got completed)

WIP Wednesday: scallops, shorts and babies

Finished up the quilt top for the scallop quilt! I love it so very much. And I especially love how easy it would be to decrease or increase the size of this quilt. Turns out I didn’t need to pin to get precise curves. Very proud of myself!

Scallop Quilt Top

Now I’m contemplating what the back of the quilt will be. It’s for a baby so I might just get some soft flannel. . . Hoping to find some polka dots that are complementary to my color scheme. We will see. And then I will have to make a decision on how to quilt! Any suggestions? My current leaning is to quilt the scallop pattern across the whole quilt.

Scallop Quilt

Points, again, aren’t perfect, but they still make me quite happy. Progress, folks, this is big progress for me.

Scallop Quilt

And remember how I was telling you about the shorts I bought to shorten a bit? Well, they were a quick fix! Here are the before and after shots:

These shorts still had their original tags on them. And they may be my favorites (I am wearing them as I type right now)!

Untitled

And I couldn’t resist snatching up a pair of shorts in my favorite color! Ohh look at those sad, pale legs – the summer will be brutal to you!

Untitled

They look black but they are actually navy. . . So much less ‘mommy’ once they are a little shorter.

Untitled

And finally, some khaki shorts. I can’t remember the last time I’ve owned a pair of khaki shorts. . . but I do now!

Untitled

Whew. I have certainly made my peace with the necessity of shorts while staying home with a kiddo! Previous to this, I didn’t really own any shorts. And really, I have nothing against a good capri or bermuda short (I have 3 bermuda from my thrifting haul and several other pairs from last summer), but with the heat that is sure to come this year, fingertip length shorts will likely be what I’m reaching for during the day to day.

And finally, some new fabrics for my next project! These are some organics from the monaco by monaluna line – they will end up as some bibs and burp rags for a friend’s sis-in-law. I love getting to work with such pretty fabrics!

from too big to ‘skinny’

OK, a couple confessions. I hate going to stores to shop. I like to shop online. And even then I don’t like spending money. Lately, I have been refashioning more and more clothing that I already have in my closet. My most recent update has been very satisfying because it’s become such a staple in my closet.

First off, I started off with a pair of jeans that a friend gave me. They were too big. Like, if you gave them a good tug, they were coming down. Not wearable.

From too big . . .

But that just means I had plenty to work with to make them fit me perfectly. I didn’t take any photos of how I made this happen, but it’s easy enough. I turned them inside out, put them back on and pinned up the sides. Then I just followed the pins and sewed them right up. If you attempt this yourself, make sure you adjust the seam that is not finished with a flat seam and the pretty stitching. You can’t replicate that on your machine. Most of my jeans have the regular seam on the outside of the legs.

Ta-da, skinny jeans!

. . . to skinny . . .

Even better with my new boots!

. . . boot jeans!

I have a couple other pants that I am refashioning this way. Love getting a new look from clothes I already have that are not being used!
