lularoe-dress-well-do-good-pop-upThis past December, Ellie and I attended an Allies Against Slavery Christmas Market where you could shop companies that are working to empower their workers and ensure that they are paid a fair wage. We met up with our friend Cynthia, who is a LuLaRoe consultant and got to have our first experience with this clothing line. We loved how affordable, comfortable, versatile, and fun their clothes are! We were even more pleased to learn that the majority of their clothing is printed and sewn here in the United States.

We recently hosted a LuLaRoe pop-up and had so much fun trying on all of their different styles and patterns! Did you know they only print 1,000 of each pattern? There are so many fun options! They also do a great job at providing a wide variety of sizes that suit all body types.

They recently made this announcement:

“LuLaRoe is excited to announce that in our commitment to improving lives we are growing our production internationally. We cannot wait to see our hopes and dreams extend across borders and into the lives of many who are seeking the kind of freedom and abundance that LuLaRoe has already helped thousands realize. We have carefully selected a few factories to partner with that meet our standards as a company for fair pay, good working conditions and strong ethics. We currently provide thousands of jobs to those working on your behalf here in the United States and will continue to produce as much here in the United States as we are able to. We are excited about this as it will allow us to continue to ensure that we have enough inventory for you at all times and allow others outside of America the chance to provide for their families and achieve their dreams. Tears of joy come to our eyes when we realize that we have such an opportunity to love and serve others not only in our country, but in other countries as well. Join with us in celebrating our continued growth as this sets our stage as an international company! Here’s to many more lives being blessed!”

We are giving away a pair of their most comfortable leggings! If you win, you will get a choice of patterns from our friend Cynthia!

IMG_1311You know we love our local Austin ethical businesses! We are so lucky to have so many to choose from with more popping up all over the place. We recently met Dusana of Mitla Moda at an event where we spoke on a panel regarding ethical fashion. She was kind enough to donate a dress for me to wear on my birthday during Dressember, so that we could then give it away in January!

Dusana has had a love of Latin American artisan goods and clothing for as long as she can remember, a love she credits to her father, a returned Peace Corps volunteer, who filled their home with handmade items he had purchased from artisan friends while abroad.

Dusana fell in love with the artisan traditions in Mexico while living in the beautiful country for ten months on a Fulbright grant. With a passion for social justice and sustainable fashion, she enrolled in an entrepreneurship class at a Mexican university during her time in Mexico, creating the business plan for Mitla Moda. Through her market research, Dusana saw a gap in a platform that offered traditional yet stylish artisan apparel in a manner that also benefited the artisan communities that craft each item. With a BA in Spanish and a BS in Marketing, Dusana decided to create the platform herself – a shop centered around fair trade and ethical manufacturing.

Mitla Moda, is a fair-trade, social entrepreneurship startup that focuses on increasing economic development in artisan communities and preserving traditional artisan techniques through ethically made and fairly traded clothing, accessories, and jewelry. She is committed to purchasing directly from the artisans in Oaxaca, one of the poorest states in Mexico, using fair trade principles, which provide sustainable, living wages that directly benefit each artisan family and the surrounding community.

We are so excited to give away this Chickadee Dress in Red with Gold Embroidery in Medium (fits a 6-10). This bold Mexican embroidered dress is perfect for the beach in summer or with leggings + boots in fall/winter! Wear it loose as is, or belt it at the waist. The blouse base is 100% cotton and is hand woven, on a traditional wooden loom. The top features beautiful Oaxacan flower embroidery, and is a sure conversation starter!

Shine Project Giveaway: Completed

shine-project-necklace-stackWe are so glad that you joined us to learn more about the work The Shine Project does equipping inner city students in Phoenix, Arizona to become first generation college students!

Company Profile and Giveaway: The Shine Project

the-shine-project-necklace-stackDuring Ashley LeMieux’s senior year of college, she was an aid at an inner city high school in Phoenix. She was involved in a program called AVID which prepares students to enter college after high school graduation. The problem she noticed, was that most of the students didn’t feel like college was on option for them. Many of the students Ashley began to mentor and grew close to would be the first in their families to consider college, had no financial resources, and didn’t have adequate mentorship to help them get to the next level in their lives. Frustrated, Ashley turned to her social media influence to raise money to send a group of seniors to college.

After giving 7 scholarships away, Ashley knew that raising money for these inner city youth needed to be more than a one time thing. She founded a non-profit organization, The Shine Scholarship Project, to be able to keep getting donations for the students. Every single student who received a scholarship would say something along the lines of, “Miss Ashley, it’s not even about the money for me. It’s the fact that people actually believe that I am worth something, that I can do it, and that I have a great potential inside of me. That motivates me more than anything.”

Several months after founding the non profit, Ashley learned of a student’s living conditions. The entire family was sleeping on their tile floor, without blankets or pillows, and the kids were missing school frequently because of a lack of money for bus tickets. Their fridge was empty, their plumbing hadn’t been working, and there was nowhere for the kids to turn for help. Ashley realized that it was hard for a lot of the students to dream about their futures when they were unsure how they would live through the day. She knew she needed to take her passion for these youth one step further and create a for profit business that could employ them, so they could learn important business and life skills, be able to sustain themselves, and have guidance throughout their college experience. She wanted a product that people could wear as a daily reminder that they directly impacted someone’s life, and created a positive change.

In May 2012, Ashley taught herself how to make bracelets. Her goal was to be able to employ the first few students that had received scholarships so they could keep earning money to stay in school, and have real life job experience that could set them up for success in the future. Ashley invested $500 in jewelry supplies and teaching the students how to hand make the jewelry out of her small two bedroom condo. One month later, in June 2012, Threads by The Shine Project launched. Ashley used her social media and friends in the blogging industry to help spread the word about the bracelets that the youth made.

“I prayed and prayed and prayed that at least my mom would buy something so that I could tell the students that we sold product that they made”, Ashley said.

After the first week, all the bracelets were sold out.

Since then, The Shine Project has opened their headquarters in downtown Phoenix. It’s a place where students come after school to hand make your jewelry. They are involved in running everything from customer service, shipping, jewelry design, t-shirt design, new product design, sales, and events. The students who are given scholarships through the non-profit are then given jobs through Threads, so they can be mentored and guided every step of the way.

Over 40 scholarships have been given since 2011, and 100% of donations given to the non-profit go directly to the students. The Shine Project currently employees 11 inner city students. Be sure to read the stories of the students too!

Company Profile and Giveaway: Mata Traders

Mata-Traders-Paper-Doll-RedEllie and I have been so impressed with the styles and craftsmanship of fair-trade fashion brand, Mata Traders. Their timeless styles are flattering and unique since their prints are hand block printed, hand screen printed, or hand embroidered. And yay, sleeves! I have a tendency to thrift lots of tank dresses, so I’m always happy to find complimentary silhouettes that include sleeves.

Mata Traders started with three best friends who visited India for four months. They were so enamored with the people, markets, and textiles that they vowed to make the country a part of their life story.

A love affair with India evolved into Mata Traders – a design driven, fair trade brand helping to end global poverty and inspire ethical companies and consumers to change the fashion industry. Made by artisans in India and Nepal, their colorfully original designs provide a stable source of income for families in some of the world’s poorest communities. Mata Traders partners with several fair trade organizations in India and Nepal that train and employ hundreds of artisans in marginalized communities, with a focus on gender equity and empowering women.

The artisan cooperatives are similar to social service agencies in the support they provide to end the cycle of poverty for the members and their families. Health care, paid maternity leave, retirement pensions, and daycare: all part of the membership package. Social workers on staff assist the artisans in addressing their personal needs, from opening a bank account to situations of domestic violence and dealing with HIV/AIDS. There are literacy classes, computer training, and regular workshops on topics like hygiene, nutrition, and parenting.

By partnering with fair trade organizations, they ensure that there is no child labor used in the production of their products. But more than that, fair trade is a preventative measure. Every year thousands of children migrate to the megacities of India to find work and send money back to their families. Providing a stable income to women at the poverty level is a way to combat the problem of child labor at its roots. The change can be seen not only in the lives of the women employed by the co-op, but in the next generation, the children the they can afford to educate.

We are so inspired by their ability to combine beauty and empowerment. The women at the cooperatives have experienced such transformative life change by using their skills to make the clothing that Mata Traders carries. We are so excited to be giving away a $100 gift card to Mata Traders so that one of you can experience their beautiful clothing firsthand!

Also, if you are a Dressember participant, you can get 20% off regularly priced items with the code ‘DRESSEMBER’!

CAUSEGEAR Giveaway: Completed!

CAUSEGEAR-mustard-tote-winnerWe hope you enjoyed learning about CAUSEGEAR and the work they are doing towards Human Justice. Keep them in mind as you are gearing up for holiday shopping. Many of their items would make great, mindful gifts.

The winner of this giveaway for the mustard CAUSEGEAR tote is Paige! Be looking for an e-mail from us so we can get your address!

Giveaway and Company Profile: CAUSEGear

CAUSEGear-Mustard-ToteAccording to the Global World Bank, 33% of the world’s poverty is located in India, which is more than any other country in the world. The Global Slavery Index reports that there are 35.8 million million slaves in the world, with 14 millions of them (40%) living in India.

These sobering stats led the founders of CAUSEGEAR to a business model that would allow for opportunity where none currently exists, with a focus on dignity and empowerment, not charity. CAUSEGEAR is designed in Chicago and made in India. Their mission is to transform the lives of one million people trapped in poverty and injustice to become self-sustaining. The fashion industry is dominated by $2, 12hr/day jobs, many in India. When jobs don’t pay for essentials (food, water, clothing, housing, medical & education), many believe the lie of a better life from a stranger, only to be kidnapped and sold as a slave. CAUSEGEAR’s focus on human justice led them to their 5X model, which provides jobs that pay 5 times the norm. This allows crafters to pay for essential items, which ends the need for hand-outs and the cycle of dependency that can result. Good jobs support a pathway out of poverty and the means for self-reliance.

CAUSEGEAR is a 4 year old company and has seen very tangible life change in the lives of their crafters already. Their crafters live in the slums of India, and their jobs with CAUSEGEAR have allowed them to care for their families in ways they haven’t previously been able, reduce their family’s vulnerability to being trafficked, and personally grow in their jobs to go from crafters to managers.

We are excited to give away this mustard tote to one of our readers today! This simple tote becomes a go-to bag for many, since it is well-made, spacious and versatile. We love it in mustard not only because it is a perfect fall color, but because this unexpected color can compliment just about any outfit!
