granny hex

Sounds like a spell a granny would cast, doesn’t it?

Anyways. I fell in love with this little pin and couldn’t get the idea of having a beautiful crocheted granny hex blanket in my house. Something about the hex shape just pulled me in. Nothing against the squares or anything. . . Now that pin talks about joining as you crochet but I wasn’t dead set on only doing coral, cream and grey so I decided against that. I think I’ll join with a flat crochet seam, when the time comes.

I love these.

Hex crochet

They are a quick little things to crochet up if you don’t have time to invest in a huge project. The pattern is easily memorized so you can do it anywhere without having to reference a pattern. And they are small! You could use up little bits of leftover yarn making these guys. I used Vickie Howell’s Sheep(ish) line in coral(ish) and white(ish) and Caron’s simply soft in grey heather. It’s going to be so soft when it’s all done!

Hex crochet

Now, as you can see, I’ve only made six of these, but I’m thinking this is an ongoing project that I can happily live with!

Munchkin Hat and Baby Loafers

Sometimes, I see baby things and I just have to make them. I saw this little munchkin hat on ravelry and I had to make it for a friend of mine that is having a little boy. It’s so impractical but I love it so much. It would be a perfect newborn picture hat! I’m thinking I should have made the pom pom a bit bigger, but oh well. It’s still ridiculous cute.

And to go with the little hat, I had to make some easy on baby loafers from Two Girls Patterns. It’s not often I see crochet items and think – wow, those are boyish! So this were a definite win. There was a bit of a learning curve for me in crocheting these up – it’s a much tighter weave than I typically do so there were some bumps along the way (and maybe a few bumps in the stitching), but I learned a lot and I think they turned out pretty cute. Who knew you could crochet to look like knitting!

I used Vicki Howell’s new yarn – Sheep(ish) in gun metal(ish) and robin egg(ish). So very soft. Cute little set for a cute little man.

Divine Hat

Sometimes you end up making things out of necessity! I realized that after packing for Taos, I did not have any beanies. At one point in my life, I had several but somehow they have all been misplaced! This was not acceptable for such a cold climate, so I joined Ravelry and found the Divine Hat crochet pattern. It had a couple stitches I hadn’t tried yet – front post and back post double crochet, but after you tubing some tutorials, I decided this was the hat for me. I used Stitch Nation by Debbie Stoller Bamboo Ewe in Eucalyptus and I love this hat. I love that the fpdc makes such a fun swirly pattern. I love the fact that the bottom looks ribbed.

Divine Hat - Crochet

And I love it even better on! A perfect cold weather addition to my closet.

And I can’t seem to put my hooks away – I have several other projects that I will be showing you, but don’t worry, I have been working on my knitting too!

Any fun crochet projects in your life?

another ‘sewcial’ weekend: winter 2011

Love these little weekend getaways. Nothing recharges me the way hanging out, relaxing and sewing seems to. This is the third time we have been able to get away and craft this year (read about the first and second times). We revisited the Wimberly Quilt Ranch once more and Amanda from My Sewcial Hour wrote up a great post about all the fun that we had there. Her pictures sum up the weekend just perfectly, go check them out!

I didn’t take many pictures worth sharing while I was there, I was just too busy working on my little projects. My first project that I finished was a quick little ornament for Jude. Bacon!! He was a free tutorial that I found on pinterest.

Bacon!

While I was making him, I just kept saying ‘bacon face’ over and over again. He’s too cute and a great addition to the other two ornaments that I’ve made each year since Jude has been born (see 2009, 2010).

Bacon! Bacon!

After that successful project, I felt ready to tackle a project I have had on my mind for several Christmas seasons. A tree skirt. Although after some discussion with the girls, this may really be called tree ‘pants’ because they’re square. . . Who knew? I used a wonky star tutorial that I sized down a bit to fit the scale of our small tree. We’re just not big Christmas tree people.

Wonky Star Mini Tree Skirt (or Pants?)

I used Kona Cotton grass and Michael Miller’s Candy Dot in Spa. Not only are we not big Christmas tree people, we’re not red and green Christmas people. Blue and green Christmas motifs make me much happier than red and green.

Wonky Star Mini Tree Skirt (or Pants?)

And with a little encouragement from the girls, I added some star quilting to the regular loops that I typically do. Pretty fun!

star stippling

I also had a bit of time to get some crochet done. This is a gift for my step-sis-in-law after she saw this hat that I made for myself. She really likes pink. It’s a free tutorial that I found on pinterest (sensing a trend here?). This is that same yarn that I’ve been using. Stitch Nation by Debbie Stoller ‘washable ewe’ in kitten, icing and zinnia.

slouchy hat

I also finished up a birthday scarf for a friend that loves yellow (it’s ‘full o’ sheep’ in honeycomb). It’s the Catherine’s wheel stitch and man, this stitch eats up yarn quickly! It’s quite nice to look at though.

catherine's wheel scarf

And here it is all rolled up, ready to be gifted.

catherine's wheel scarf

Such a wonderful weekend with such lovely, creative ladies (you can see I’m modeling the yellow scarf below and holding the tree skirt)! It was so much fun to see what everyone was capable of making. I must say I am inspired to try some new things now, including knitting! Can’t wait to do it again!

a little more crochet

I made this cowl pattern up as a little giveaway for a mom’s group that I meet up with every other week. It’s made from big chunky yarn so it crocheted up super quick with minimal effort. It ended up around this lovely lady’s neck, perfectly complimenting her beautiful red hair. I may have to make one for myself. 🙂

And then I decided that I wanted a hat that would keep my ears warm that was a little more stylish than a beanie so I found this free crochet hat pattern on pinterest! I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. It’s a bit boho but I think that’s kinda why I love it. I’ve been wearing it almost everyday.

Here’s a side view so you can see the slouch.

And I have so many more good things in the works to share with you guys. Oh the holiday season overflows with ideas . . . What crafty items have you been working on lately?

bit by the yarn bug

I can’t seem to get enough crochet these days. I guess it’s because the weather is finally cooling down and I can tote these projects with me wherever I go.

I finished my scarf! I love the crocodile stitch. It looks so complicated! And how funny that it kinda looks like fall in this picture. The red leaves behind me are actually dead red tipped photinia. We’ll just pretend that we get fall color in Austin, right? Right.

crocodile scarf

I even love the way the back looks. Very interesting.

crocodile scarf

It ended up a little too wide and a bit too short, but that’s why I’m keeping this guy for myself. I added tassels but I think I might take them off. Not sure I’m feeling it.

crocodile scarf

In fact, I loved this stitch so much, I crocheted up another one as a birthday gift for a scarf-loving friend. I skinnied it up and made it longer. I used the Stitch Nation yarn by Debbie Stoller once more in ‘full ‘o sheep’ in Thyme, ‘bamboo ewe’ in sprout and ‘washable ewe’ in kitten. Love that grey kitten color with practically any other colors.

green crocodile scarf

It’s so cute bundled up and ready to be given away! I did toy with the idea of making these to sell but they just take too long to make. I would have to charge over $100 per scarf which seems so silly to me (although Anthropologie doesn’t seem to have a problem doing that . . . hmm . . ).

green crocodile scarf

And because my fingers were still itching to crochet, I made this little newborn cluster hat for a friend that is having a little girl in December. I am so not good at girly colors but I do love yellow and grey (there’s that kitten color again and I had just enough honeycomb to make a four petaled flower), and the flower makes it girly, right? I love this cluster stitch and I can’t believe that a simple slip stitch makes that awesome ribbing on the bottom of the hat. It only took about an hour to make! I am going to have to make an adult sized one of these for myself!

newborn cluster hat

Got a couple other yarny project planned in the next couple of weeks. Anyone have any good patterns they think I should know about? What are you crafting lately?

when the weather drops below 90 degrees . . .

… it suddenly feels like it’s time to start working on winter projects again. Which of course means revisiting my fairly new skill of crocheting.

A friend of mine just found out she is having her second little boy and hinted that a monkey hat would be much welcomed in their house. I was happy to oblige and revisit the monkey hat pattern that I made so many of last year. I made the 0-3 month pattern but it really seems more like a 3-6 month fit. I made sure to follow the stitch counts exactly but oh well – it will just have to be a little bit big. It sure is cute though!

Monkey Hat Season

Starting and finishing that beanie gave me the crochet bug. I saw this crochet stitch on pinterest and was just enthralled. It looks so complicated! Turns out, it’s only two stitches, a chain stitch and double crochet and I can do both of those! I did a couple test runs with the youtube videos on that pinterest link and went out and bought some dreamy colors of yarn.

Crocodile Scarf - the Beginnings

I think I haven’t been enjoying crocheting as much as I could be because I have been using cheap yarn. It kinda feels like plastic to me. Not soft and comfy and something you would want close to your skin. This yarn is so soft and beautiful. I just love it. It’s the Stitch Nation yarn by Debbie Stoller ‘washable ewe’ in kitten and ‘full o’ sheep’ in little lamb and honeycomb. It’s a little pricey but I use my Joann’s 50% off coupons that I get by e-mail and mail and it makes it much more affordable!

Crocodile Scarf - the Beginnings

I can’t believe that I’m making this. It looks like something I would buy in a store! I’m going to keep going with it until I use up all the yarn to see how long I can get the scarf. I love it.

My next yarn task? Learn how to knit. . . Just got to go buy some needles. 🙂

Crocheting Monkey Beanies

I finally made my monkey a monkey beanie! I figured he most definitely needed one since it’s so cold in Colorado. At least, in comparison to Austin! Oh my goodness, I LOVE this beanie! Especially since you tie it under the chin – Jude will NOT keep hats on. (Ahem, pay no attention to the cottage cheese smeared all over his mouth, kiddo is always making a mess of his food and not letting me wipe his mouth!) This monkey beanie free easy crochet pattern that you can find here.

Monkey Beanie for a Monkey

And I just couldn’t stop making these cute beanies! I made a couple for some little girls that I know too. Mainly because I wanted a chance to play with some fun girly colors and to try my hand at making crochet flowers. When I get the urge to make little girl things, I’m grateful I have friends with little girls so I can get that out of my system! Here is the black with pink detailing:

And pink with black detailing.

I’m a little addicted to crochet. . . mainly just beanies. Monkey beanies. 🙂

yarn action

I am still loving the crochet skills that I picked up not long ago. It’s nice to be able to have a little something to keep my hands busy when we’re watching TV or a movie. Sewing is a little noisy . . . crochet, not so much!

I saw this cute little slippers on etsy one day and saw the pattern for sale from Mamachee! This is the first thing I have made following a pattern and I think they were pretty successful. These were a Christmas gift. I kinda love the obnoxious colors but originally had wanted a more subdued orange. Oh well!

Mamachee Crochet slippers

Looking more at Mamachee’s blog, I found something that I had admired for awhile. A monkey earflap beanie! Mamachee kindly allows people to sell items made from her patterns and I had spied this beanie on etsy awhile back. I decided I would try my hand at making a monkey hat for my little monkey! Turns out the hook sizes matter a lot. I didn’t have the hook called for in the pattern and. . . well . . . it turned into a non-monkey hat for me. I’ll give it another try with the correct hook size soon.

Oops, that hat is too big for Jude so it's mine now.

Pretty soon we will be heading to a much colder area of the country and Jason realized he didn’t have much cold weather wear to speak of. I mean, we live in Texas, there isn’t much need for scarves and beanies here! So I took it on myself to make Jason a guy-ish beanie and scarf set. I think I accomplished that pretty well. I did not use a pattern for either the scarf or the beanie. . . turns out you don’t really need to have a pattern!
