knitting update: kage, cowl, hat, beanie, and dress

I’m almost done knitting my kage sweater! Well, I’m done knitting, but working on weaving in ends, seaming the pieces together and finishing edges. The linen is so soft and lovely, I can’t wait to wear this sweater once it’s complete. And you want to know what’s exciting about this knit piece? It can go in the washer and dryer … AND it comes out softer each time! Yay linen yarn! You may be unforgiving but you do have your huge merits.

And isn’t this the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen? A box full of beautiful colors of yarn. Just wait and see what I’m going to do with it all.

Here’s a little hint – I may be opening up my shop again for a good cause. More to come on that later (and these photos make me giggle because I was so excited, I couldn’t wait to take off the whitening strip on my teeth)…

My friends are still having babies! And a good friend is having a little girl, so I crocheted up a familiar little hat and the sweetest dress.

It may be one of my favorite things I have crocheted. I took some queues from this granny square crochet/fabric dress pattern but sized it down, added a shell stitch edge and changed the straps.

Pretty excited to wrap this one up and see the mama-to-be open it up! 🙂

Knitting the Spring Beret

I finished knitting up the hat that I choose for myself! Everyone seemed to like a different hat, so in the end, I just had to go with my gut, the Spring Beret. Really, this just means that I need to make a couple more hats. 🙂

I used Knit Picks Capra in Turmeric – it’s a lovely cashmere blend. It was a smaller weight yarn than the pattern called for so I made the larger ‘slouchier’ version and it turned out just as I had hoped, just the tiniest bit slouchy. This was my first time to work lace and I learned a lot – it was a good pattern to try it out.

can’t stop knitting

Obsessive personality much? I can’t seem to stop knitting. Well, and being sick with the flu for a week seems to increase the amount of time spent laying down. Knitting keeps my hands busy, what can I say. And it also seems to keep me from blogging. Oh well. I’m back now!

I’ve made some progress on my Downton Abbey KAL (ohemgee, did y’all SEE the last episode? I already saw it before it aired in the US and I am still sad.) and I’m pretty happy with how it’s turning out. Not sure what is going to end up being the fate of this hat. I’m not much of a hat person. . .

Regina Hat - Downton Abbey KAL

I may be ruining a surprise by posting about this, but I made this Aviatrix hat as a baby shower gift for a friend of mine. Totally blew my mind that this hat is knit flat. Yeah, not in the round. Just straight rows (you know, with increases and decreases and stuff). A perfect first hat knitting project. I’m still struggling to get my gauge correct (I swatched, like a good knitter too!). This was supposed to be newborn size, but it’s more like 1 year old size. Good thing kids grow.

Aviatrix Hat

I love that this button finally found a home. I only had one and I love it dearly (I know, I love a button?) and it has found it’s destiny.

Aviatrix Hat - Button Detail

I whipped up this fun Capucine hat after seeing it on a friend’s blog; it’s a very quick knit with the bulky yarn and all. It was the perfect gift for a friend that has a small obsession with hats (that may be an understatement). And my first hat to knit in the round. Turns out the magic loop technique is awesome. No more double pointed needles for me!

Capucine Hat

Instead of going with smallish tassels on the earflaps and a pom pom, I decided to go just for the epic, gigantic pom pom. I think it works.

Next up, finishing the Downtown KAL and starting my first pair of socks.

cowls, sweaters and art deco hats

I got a bit of new yarn this week (belated Christmas gift) and wanted to test out my new set of Christmas knitting needles as well as try knitting with bulky yarn. After a bit of a search, along came the drop stitch cowl.

Dropped Stitch Cowl

After knitting something with bulky yarn, I now understand the appeal – I started and finished this cowl on the same day! And I learned a new stitch! I completed three of the five drop stitch rows and would have liked to done them all to make it taller but I ran out of yarn. The cowl is still cozy and warm so I’m not going to worry about it too much.

Dropped Stitch Cowl

And I’m making some good progress on Jude’s sweater which is now sized large enough. In the future I will think twice about starting a large project with sock yarn again. . . it is a slow going process but I do love how soft, delicate and beautiful it is turning out. And don’t you just love that yarn bowl? Another great Christmas present.

Jude's latte sweater

I am also participating in the Downton Abbey KAL and I think I’m going to try my hand at the Regina art deco styled hat. I’ve never knit a hat and it seems so different from crocheting a hat . . . but it’ll be a good learning experience!

winter ‘sewcial’ sewing retreat

This past weekend I had the pleasure of getting away for a sewing retreat and oh man, it felt good – I actually got to start and finish things in the same day! (Read about past retreats here, here and here) That just never seems to happen anymore. I also got to spend some time with some lovely ladies, eat some delicious food, and paint my toenails. It’s the little things.

The first project I completed was for Jude’s yearly felt ornament. Last year was bacon (2010, 2009). This year, a pirate pickle. Apparently I like food ornaments. Don’t judge my execution of the colonial knot. Still learning here!

Christmas Pirate Pickle

Here is his backside, complete with 2012, with his friend bacon. Pickles and bacon. . . nope, still not pregnant.

Pirate Pickle 2012

Then I whipped up another Shell Stitch Beanie (with a pink flower) because after the winner of my giveaway received her first first shell stitch beanie for the little girl she is expecting, she asked if I would sell her one for her older daughter so they could match. I’m a bit of a sucker for matching siblings so I consented. It’s a great easy pattern with beautiful results, don’t you think?

Toddler Shell Stitch Hat

Following our ‘something you want (new pedal bike from craigslist!!), something you need (bedroom side table with lego/train top), something to wear (undies and socks), something to read (complete collection of curious George)’ Christmas gifts, I decided to add to the undies and socks that Jude was receiving from us this year. He’s been so into painting and cooking with me and his clothes always end up a mess. I decided to make him an apron that he could put on himself. At the nearby quilting store I found Michael Miller’s multi-color patchwork in plaid laminate. Finally, I did a little searching around and found an apron I liked, drew up a sketch and sewed it up! Sometimes sewing without a pattern is incredibly liberating. Not bad, eh?

Little Boy Art/Cooking Apron

I also found some fabrics to make some new pillows for our living room. I really wanted an eclectic mix of geometric fabrics and I think I got it! Anna Maria Horner Field Study in Coordinates Saffron, echo by Lotta Jansdotter in choma goldenrod, a grey chevron I already had, and a fabric I forgot to  write down the name of before I cut off the selvage. Oops!

New Pillows

Here they are in their new homes! I love those orange pom poms.

New Pillows!

I actually have plans for a different pillow for this chair in the long term, but for now . . .

New Pillows!

and finally… I got to make cording for the first time to line the exterior of this pillow. I’m so happy with the results!

New Pillows

There are a few other projects I was working on that are in process, so you will get to see them later! Great weekend ladies, can’t wait to do it again!

Divine Hat

Sometimes you end up making things out of necessity! I realized that after packing for Taos, I did not have any beanies. At one point in my life, I had several but somehow they have all been misplaced! This was not acceptable for such a cold climate, so I joined Ravelry and found the Divine Hat crochet pattern. It had a couple stitches I hadn’t tried yet – front post and back post double crochet, but after you tubing some tutorials, I decided this was the hat for me. I used Stitch Nation by Debbie Stoller Bamboo Ewe in Eucalyptus and I love this hat. I love that the fpdc makes such a fun swirly pattern. I love the fact that the bottom looks ribbed.

And I love it even better on! A perfect cold weather addition to my closet.

And I can’t seem to put my hooks away – I have several other projects that I will be showing you, but don’t worry, I have been working on my knitting too!

Any fun crochet projects in your life?

another ‘sewcial’ weekend: winter 2011

Love these little weekend getaways. Nothing recharges me the way hanging out, relaxing and sewing seems to. This is the third time we have been able to get away and craft this year (read about the first and second times). We revisited the Wimberly Quilt Ranch once more and Amanda from My Sewcial Hour wrote up a great post about all the fun that we had there. Her pictures sum up the weekend just perfectly, go check them out!

I didn’t take many pictures worth sharing while I was there, I was just too busy working on my little projects. My first project that I finished was a quick little ornament for Jude. Bacon!! He was a free tutorial that I found on pinterest.

Bacon!

While I was making him, I just kept saying ‘bacon face’ over and over again. He’s too cute and a great addition to the other two ornaments that I’ve made each year since Jude has been born (see 2009, 2010).

Bacon! Bacon!

After that successful project, I felt ready to tackle a project I have had on my mind for several Christmas seasons. A tree skirt. Although after some discussion with the girls, this may really be called tree ‘pants’ because they’re square. . . Who knew? I used a wonky star tutorial that I sized down a bit to fit the scale of our small tree. We’re just not big Christmas tree people.

Wonky Star Mini Tree Skirt (or Pants?)

I used Kona Cotton grass and Michael Miller’s Candy Dot in Spa. Not only are we not big Christmas tree people, we’re not red and green Christmas people. Blue and green Christmas motifs make me much happier than red and green.

Wonky Star Mini Tree Skirt (or Pants?)

And with a little encouragement from the girls, I added some star quilting to the regular loops that I typically do. Pretty fun!

star stippling

I also had a bit of time to get some crochet done. This is a gift for my step-sis-in-law after she saw this hat that I made for myself. She really likes pink. It’s a free tutorial that I found on pinterest (sensing a trend here?). This is that same yarn that I’ve been using. Stitch Nation by Debbie Stoller ‘washable ewe’ in kitten, icing and zinnia.

slouchy hat

I also finished up a birthday scarf for a friend that loves yellow (it’s ‘full o’ sheep’ in honeycomb). It’s the Catherine’s wheel stitch and man, this stitch eats up yarn quickly! It’s quite nice to look at though.

catherine's wheel scarf

And here it is all rolled up, ready to be gifted.

catherine's wheel scarf

Such a wonderful weekend with such lovely, creative ladies (you can see I’m modeling the yellow scarf below and holding the tree skirt)! It was so much fun to see what everyone was capable of making. I must say I am inspired to try some new things now, including knitting! Can’t wait to do it again!

when the weather drops below 90 degrees . . .

… it suddenly feels like it’s time to start working on winter projects again. Which of course means revisiting my fairly new skill of crocheting.

A friend of mine just found out she is having her second little boy and hinted that a monkey hat would be much welcomed in their house. I was happy to oblige and revisit the monkey hat pattern that I made so many of last year. I made the 0-3 month pattern but it really seems more like a 3-6 month fit. I made sure to follow the stitch counts exactly but oh well – it will just have to be a little bit big. It sure is cute though!

Monkey Hat Season

Starting and finishing that beanie gave me the crochet bug. I saw this crochet stitch on pinterest and was just enthralled. It looks so complicated! Turns out, it’s only two stitches, a chain stitch and double crochet and I can do both of those! I did a couple test runs with the youtube videos on that pinterest link and went out and bought some dreamy colors of yarn.

Crocodile Scarf - the Beginnings

I think I haven’t been enjoying crocheting as much as I could be because I have been using cheap yarn. It kinda feels like plastic to me. Not soft and comfy and something you would want close to your skin. This yarn is so soft and beautiful. I just love it. It’s the Stitch Nation yarn by Debbie Stoller ‘washable ewe’ in kitten and ‘full o’ sheep’ in little lamb and honeycomb. It’s a little pricey but I use my Joann’s 50% off coupons that I get by e-mail and mail and it makes it much more affordable!

Crocodile Scarf - the Beginnings

I can’t believe that I’m making this. It looks like something I would buy in a store! I’m going to keep going with it until I use up all the yarn to see how long I can get the scarf. I love it.

My next yarn task? Learn how to knit. . . Just got to go buy some needles. 🙂
